Exhibition "Brest, a city of polar explorations"


The exhibition "Brest, a city of polar explorations" aims to give the general public both an historical and present overview of polar areas which offer major challenges for the future. Exceptional local records from the archives department, such as exploration books, ancient maps, written and material testimonies gave the historical Defence department of Brest the opportunity to bring together a great deal of partners specialized in the sudy of pole zones, and all located in the vicinity of Brest, especially : the french polar institute, the european higher institute of the sea (IUEM), the French National Institute for Ocean Science (IFREMER), the french national hydrographic office (SHOM).

Brest and Brittany host France’s leading marine science and technology community embodied by the Campus mondial de la mer

In the afternoon of May 23rd in Brest and Roscoff, our team proposes to EMD participants to discover some of the Campus mondial de la mer key players through 12 visits detailed below. 

To access these visits, registration was mandatory.

A. How the French State is organised to respond to any offshore Oil Spill and Marine Emergencies - THIS VISIT IS CANCELLED

Organisation : French Navy & Ceppol


Description: On board of a French Navy Oil Spill Response Vessel alongside in Brest, show different devices and technology with static and possibly dynamic demonstration. Exhibit the French capabilities to respond: oil spill, emergency towing, firefighting, damage control divers … exchange with responder and team member about their duty.

Maximum number of participants : 12 people (2 groups of 6 people)

    How to go there : by foot it takes 15 minutes from the city center. More information to come after registration.


    B. Know more about light measurement at Cerema’s facilities and benefit from a technical tour to « Le Petit Minou » lighthouse

    Description: Light measurement at Cerema’s facilities and tour to « le petit Minou » lighthouse.

      C. Visit of the VIGISAT antenna – The French maritime surveillance centre using satellite data  - THIS VISIT IS CANCELLED

      Organisation : CLS - Collecte Localisation Satellites


      Description: Expert analysts in the field of maritime surveillance use every day data from heterogeneous sources (satellite images, AIS/VMS/LRIT tracking systems, meteorological and oceanographic data, ship databases, etc.). These data are received at VIGISAT, processed and qualified, and then merged for behavioural analysis of vessels and anomalies detection. Data and case studies will be presented as well as VIGISAT, the only maritime surveillance center receiving high resolution satellite radar images thanks to its satellite ground receiving station, unique in France.

        D. Brest Maritime Cyber Tour: meet the maritime cybersecurity players of Brest and their operational capabilities

        Organisation : France Cyber Maritime, Diateam, Ecole navale, Mica Center & CyberGendMar


        Description: The 2023 edition of the European Maritime Day, which will take place in Brest, offers a good opportunity to promote this local expertise among European maritime leaders. The « Brest Maritime Cyber Tour » will allow them to visit the maritime cybersecurity infrastructures, apprehend the operational and technical platforms in motion and identify the possible synergies at the European level.

          How to go there : By foot it takes 15 minutes to go the the "Le Grand large" building so that you can take the boat to the Ecole navale (Naval academy). Meeting is at 1.20pm.
          When back from the Ecole navale, you can go by foot to the Castle (MICA Center visit).
          When the visit of the Castle is over, you can take the tram to go do Diateam.


          E. Discover France Energies Marines, the French centre of expertise for renewable marine energy  - THIS VISIT IS CANCELLED

          Organisation : France Energies Marines, the French institute for energy transition dedicated to marine renewable energy


          Description: Come and visit the French institute for energy transition dedicated to marine renewable energy to discover our different research programmes that support the development of offshore wind farms and other marine energies. We will give visitors some insights into the different fields of research we are working on such as wave and wind characterisation, turbulence, mooring, dynamic cables, biofouling, marine fauna and ecosystems, farm optimization and more. We will also take the visitors to our workshop where we will introduce them to some of the equipment we use to make measurements at sea and will happily answer any questions they may have about our work.

          Maximum number of participants: 40 people (4 groups of 10 people visit simultaneously)

          F. Visit of laboratories of the French Corrosion Institute  - THIS VISIT IS CANCELLED

          Organisation : French Corrosion Institute


          Description: Visit of the test facilities: accelerated corrosion tests in climatic chamber, natural sea water tests, corrosion fatigue, UV, exposure in soils, surface characterisation (Raman, SEM/EDX, Scanning Kelvin Probe, ...), electrochemistry, hydrogen embrittlement...

            Maximum number of participants: 10 people

            G. Visit Ifremer headquarters and its Britanny Center

            Organisation : Ifremer


            Description: IFREMER's vision is to advance science, expertise and innovation to:
            - Protect and restore the ocean
            - Sustainably use marine resources to benefit society
            - Create and share ocean data, information & knowledge.
            This visit of Ifremer will allow the congresses to visit one of the most interesting French oceanic scientific infrastructures, understand better our activities including the management of the French oceanographic fleet, and meet with high-level scientists

              H. Visit of the European Institute for Marine Studies and visit of the Ocean Spectrometry Platform (Pôle de Spectrométrie Océan)

              Organisation : European Institute for Marine Studies (IUEM/UBO)


              Description: University of Bretagne Occidentale with its strong territorial roots and networks is naturally focused on the sea (ranked 11th in the world in the Shanghai rankings, (in the) "oceanography" category in 2022). Though its national and international influence also benefits from its strengths in information sciences and technologies, human and social sciences and health sciences. Its ocean institute IUEM occupies a prime position in a territory that has defined as a strategic sector “Sea by excellence" .

                I. Visit of OCEANOLAB

                Organisation : OCEANOPOLIS (National Center of Scientific Culture dedicated to the Ocean) and IUEM/UBO (Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer de l’Université de Bretagne Occidentale)


                Description: OCEANOLAB is a new space at Océanopolis to share science "in the making" by moving the scientific laboratory closer to the public and opening it up to the public. Océanopolis and IUEM/UBO have designed, developed and implemented OCEANOLAB, which aims to bring together scientists and citizens around research projects in marine ecology in the context of climate change, pollution and the erosion of marine biodiversity. The aim of this programme is to share scientific work with the public in real time over a period of several months in a specifically dedicated space at the heart of Océanopolis. OCEANOLAB brings scientific teams out of their laboratories and closer to a society that questions them. Marine research projects conducted by scientific organisations will be carried out in public, and mediation activities will take place, from experiments to results. Each year, a new project led by a new team of scientists will be presented to the public. This place allows to build and consolidate the links between science and society.

                  J. Visit the Roscoff marine Station

                  Organisation : Roscoff Marine Station


                  Description: The Roscoff Marine Station belongs to the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC-ESFRI), a European research infrastructure that provides researchers and companies access to marine organisms and the facilities to study them, including experimental facilities and technological platfoms.

                    K. Visit of the metrology infrastructures of Shom

                    Organisation : SHOM (French hydrographic Service)


                    Description: To maintain the quality of the measurements acquired at sea by instruments, Shom developed its own metrology laboratory in 1996. This laboratory is competent for physical, chemical and biological quantities. It calibrates more than 600 sensors per year and processes around 3000 analysis of sea water samples. Because of the growing number of instruments and the upcoming of autonomous vehicules, the actual laboratory needs to increase its capacities. The project of a new laboratory taking into account the needs of other French partners is on going.

                    L. Discovery of the UTOPIA expedition sailboat

                    Organisation : Utopia


                    Description: We are delighted to welcome you aboard Aquarelle, the old rig of the UTOPIA association, to discover the backstage of the expedition "A Sea Named Plastic". An environmental expedition around the Atlantic Ocean to study the issues and impacts of plastics around the world.
                    On the program, presentation of the project and the expedition and discovery of the sailboat, an old wooden rigging.

                      Post-EMD events & visits


                      French national rowing championship

                      26-27 May 2023

                      A French national rowing championship will be organised in Brest, 26 and 27 May 2023. The event will gather 25 sea and river-rowing clubs involving 700 participants in the bay of Brest.

                      The race departure will be located close to the Albert Louppe, bridge, a concrete work of the 1930s today used only by pedestrians and the arrival in the marina located closed to Oceanopolis, a well-known scientific aquarium.  

                      The race will be seen by about 2 000 spectators in a festive atmosphere with stands for foods and drinks and music. 

                      In addition, some stands will be dedicated to the marine environment and the event itself will be environmentally friendly favoring prevention of plastic pollution, careful use of water and local food products. 


                      Europe and Brest: the voices of the future
                      26 May

                      Created in partnership with the company “Théâtre d'ici et là” and students from the University and Erasmus of Brest, this sound walk will take you from the City Hall to the Esplanade de la Fraternité, on the other side of the river. You will stroll to the sounds and voices of the past and the future that forge the links between Brest and Europe.

                      Charged smartphone and headphones are essential to listen to the walk live.

                      Come and discover sustainable seafood products from Brittany!

                      Description: the association «Aux Goûts du jour” will welcome you on their stand located on the port of Brest, which ambition is to raise awareness and promote local and sustainable seafood. We propose. We offer a giant "snakes and ladders game" so that visitors can discover the Breton gastronomic heritage through questions and tests. Our stand will be located not far from the Brest Fish Auction
